Welcome to Grade 10 Visual ARts!This course is the first half of the two year arts program for secondary 4 and 5 students.
This program has been developed to allow students in the senior levels to explore the visual arts while building technical skill and experimenting with a wide range of materials and media. Teacher-led formative exercises will be coupled with more open-ended summative tasks allowing for the development of thorough artistic process. This inquiry-based program will provide students with the opportunity explore, examine and discuss work from past and present artists in order to inform their own artistic practice and to understand the role of arts within society.
Units?
Allowing for students to have a voice in the broader social topics we discuss is important to me. As a result, the contexts of the broader units have not been decided for the year, instead they will be developed with students as we go. As an example though, our Term 1 unit looks at the phenomenon of Selfies in the 21st century and reflects on the long history of self portraiture and how we can use art to tell more about ourselves than what is on the surface. Later in the year we will complete a unit inspired by the work of Kehinde Wiley. Students will discuss what power and influence mean in society and, reflecting on their personal values, will select one person to be the focus of their creation. Skills and techniques will include grid enlargement and creating repeating patterns. Every unit will include an examination of past and present art work and theory, and will provide opportunities for students to create/perform both individually and collaboratively. Within the context of this course, students will be exposed to, and will discuss a wide range of art forms and styles. Both the Quebec Education Program Competencies and the IB Middle Years Programme Criteria will be covered and assessed throughout the year. Please see the ABOUT section for details. Upcoming dates:Final Tiles due by the end of class on Feb. 24th
